Fossett Breaks Distance Flight Record

Adventurer Steve Fossett completed the longest nonstop flight in aviation history today, making an emergency landing after flying 26,389 miles in 76 hours. Fossett had the flight record when he passed over Shannon, Ireland, but was prepared to land at Kent in southern England. Instead generator failure forced a landing in Bournemouth, England, where Fossett was given a clearance for the mayday landing. Read about the history-making flight here. SirRichard Branson of Virgin Atlantic Airways, pictured with Steve Fossett at left, financed the record-breaking flight.
